You really don’t need an expensive flat iron to create these beautiful curls. I think it would be nice to have a GDH or Dyson iron, but anything less would work. The iron I use is from Remington and costs about $45.
The only thing that curls in a flat iron is that it has a round barrel so that it slides around the hair easily.
Below I’ve listed some irons that I like at different price points. Mine is no longer available, but I still don’t recommend it because when you use it, your hand is pressing the heat switch and it heats up to full temp and gets ridiculously hot. But Remington as a brand is good for the price and this is my second iron with them!
Thermal protection is very important! The hair oil I use (provided in the preparation section) protects my hair from the heat, but I don’t apply it all over my hair, so I like to use a spray as well to avoid damaging my hair.

When curling, you can start from the right or left side, just make sure you curl the entire side (from the back of the head to the middle of the head) before starting on the other side.
