A double twist is a simple, beautifully protective style with an added bonus: it can help lock in moisture. While straight curls work well on a variety of textures, two strands generally work best on all-natural hair because the ends are usually held together without the extra help of bands or barrettes. Twists can also be combined with other styles, such as braids and afros.

We want you to try to reverse it one more time. A twist, also known as a two-strand twist, is a hairstyle made by twisting two strands of hair around each other and twisting them to the ends. Hair cuts can vary from large to small.

“Two strands are one of my favorite styles for natural colors,” says Sims. “They’re lightweight, don’t put pressure on the hair [and] don’t require heat.” Bomani agrees: “[Twisting] helps the hair retain moisture longer and prevent tangles. A low-maintenance hairstyle relaxes the hair as it involves less manipulation. Less handling, resulting in better moisture retention. Less hair breakage.”

With all these benefits, we can see why dual strand twists get high marks from hair experts and naturals alike. Double twists are a great protective style because you can leave them in for days or weeks. You can also clean and condition your hair while it’s curled if you want to wear it for a while. Not to mention that twists also work well in combination with other natural styles. You can twist the front part of your hair flat on the crown and leave the rest of the length in two strands. You can also get creative by styling the same set of twists into a bun, chignon or ponytail, or a simple bun. You can try various styling options with this hairstyle. Plus, when you’re tired of leaving your hair braided, detangle it and you’ll still have it

Starting any style with a clean, hydrated base is essential. “When preparing for a two-strand twist, it’s important to keep your hair moisturized and fully detangled to avoid possible future tangling and breakage,” says Bomani.

Wash your hair with a moisturizing shampoo, followed by a deep treatment. Once your hair is washed and conditioned, dry it with a microfiber towel. Sims recommends applying a leave-in conditioner, followed by a cream or oil (or both) to lock in moisture. You can then begin to section your hair, working from the bottom to the roots.

First, decide on the size of your curls; Less twists, more definition if and when you style your hair. After landing on the twist size, take this section of hair and add some curling cream.

Until you find a proven favorite, you may need to experiment with different products to achieve the final look and hold you want for that style. A good degree of hold helps the bandages stay in place without premature tangling or frizzing, but avoid hard, heavy gels.

Take your twisted section and divide it in half. One of the most important things to remember when making your twists is to start with two equal parts. If one section is thicker and/or longer than the other, you won’t be able to create an even twist along the length of that section. You will have to “borrow” from another section, which will result in an uneven curve.

Flip each section over one another, working downwards. Be sure to separate your hair from your face.

Braids & Twists

Adding extensions isn’t necessary when creating twists, but if you want it to last longer, adding synthetic hair is your best bet, giving you the option to create twist styles like Senegalese twists or Marleys. You can also add colored hair extensions if you want to create a different look than usual.

Be sure to sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase to keep bounce at night. “After a few days, your curlers will start to dry out,” hairstylist Sarah Sango tells us. “Spritz each of your twists with a small amount of water. This will wake up the existing products in the hair. If you feel your hair needs more product, add accordingly.”

Although the hairstyle is easy to do, not everyone gets it perfect the first (or fifth) time. You may need to practice more, paying particular attention to the size of the part you are twisting; By making sure that each section is the same, your results will be more consistent. You may need to experiment with products to find the ones that work best for you. Either way, you will eventually master the twist of your dreams. There are few natural hairstyles that are as popular as two locks. This hairstyle is versatile, low maintenance, anti-frizz, easy to grow and can be styled in many ways.

How often you curl your hair depends on your hair texture and lifestyle. If you have a 4c hair texture and do a lot of physical activity, you can twist your hair every three weeks. This will ensure that the curls don’t start to bunch up and will keep them clean and frizz-free.
